Christian counseling has proven to be a helpful option for people who are struggling with a wide variety of different issues. However, many people who could benefit from seeing a counselor will hesitate to do so because they are afraid to take that step or embarrassed that friends and family might find out.

The truth of the matter is that a counselor’s clients are just like you and me. They are normal people who struggle with some specific difficulties in their lives and they are taking the time to see a counselor or therapist who can help them to deal with this situation.

If you have been struggling with something in your life and contemplated seeing a Christian counselor, this article will hopefully help you to see some of the many ways that you can benefit from taking action and getting to see a counselor.

1. Overcoming Struggles

A counselor’s typical client will be facing something specific in their life that they are seeking help for. That issue could be stress, addiction recovery, attention problems, depression, marriage issues, or really just about any other struggle.

2. Focusing on God and Scripture

Unlike secular counselors, a Christian counselor will base all of their guidance on Scripture and basic biblical principles. Because of this, if you are to see a Christian counselor and heed his/her advice, it may help you to focus on the proper things like God and Scripture, which can help you to deal with the issues in your life.

3. Self Evaluation

Most of the time when we have problems we tend to focus on the other people involved and what they are doing wrong or what they are doing that we don’t like. The truth is, we often have a need to evaluate ourselves and see how we are handling the situation and what is within our power to improve things. A counselor can help as an outside party to encourage that self evaluation that might be otherwise overlooked.

4. Prayer

Many Christian counselors have a practice of taking time in prayer with their clients to ask for God’s help and guidance with the situation. This is typically done in addition to using Scripture in the counseling and can make an impact in terms of helping to handle a situation as well as possible.

5. Godly Guidance

In some ways a Christian counselor can also serve as a mentor that you can trust and turn to in difficult times. You may or may not have a good Christian mentor in your life, but if you do not, consider seeing a Christian counselor that can help in these situations.

6. Someone to Talk To

A big part of what a Christian counselor does is listen. Many clients are helped by just being able to voice their frustrations and struggles. A good Christian counselor will take the time to listen and really understand the situation of the client.

7. Relating to Others

Many of the issues that counselors deal with every day involve multiple people and some type of relationship or communication issues. Being able to interact with others and build healthy relationships is a big key to correcting these issues and avoiding problems in the future.
