The Mayan Calendar has left us with a profound mystery. Acadamia, science and the clergy have labored long over the question as to why the calendar was extrapolated into the 21st century and why, on December 21st, 2012, it abruptly ends?
More and more people are drawing up theories, and novelists have noticed, but scientists are much more disinterested. A celestial event that is known to occur only once every 26,000 years will occur on or about December 21, 2012. On that date, the galaxy will completely align, with unknown consequences for Earth. Tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanoes may become more active on that day. It’s impossible to say for sure. However, this planet is old enough to have survived many previous alignments and will almost certainly survive this one.
We also don’t know what the effect will be on the world’s people. But scientists believe that after the 26,000-year cycle of the Mayan calendar, a new cycle will start and life will go on.
Many academics have remained neutral regarding their opinions of the 2012 prophecy though they regard the issue as “interesting”. Religions, as they are always wont to do, have extended their predictions as to how the world will end if the 2012 prophecy occurs. As always, the predictions are grim and bloody.
The Bible points to a war of good and evil preceeding the “end of days.” The followers of Christ will do battle with the legions of Satan. The victor will seize Earth and all its inhabitants.
A more optimistic rendering is that mankind will enter the seventh day of creation, or the “Sabbath Rest.” This theory is founded on the notion that “God created the heavens and the Earth in six days and rested on the seventh day.” Theologists maintain that “God’s day” is, in fact, 26,000 of our years. To compute that even six of God’s days does not equal the life of our planet is to blindly assume that the Almighty worked his magic on consecutive days. With the impending advent of this cycle on December 21st, 2012, a belief is held that we will be entering this seventh day. This “day of rest”, or “Sabbath Rest” will begin a season of peace for mankind.
Jesus will return to guide the human race, and war and sickness will be ended. Some people believe that the dead will come back, so that they may share in the good times.
With two plus years to ponder the situation, it will be “interesting” attempting to decide which debate will survive.
