Many people who are facing difficulties and struggles in their lives will turn to a Christian counselor for assistance. A counselor can give you a professional, experienced perspective on your situation, and can help you to move forward in the most effective way. A Christian counselor is different from a secular counselor in that all of the advice and guidance that is given is rooted in the Word of God, and the client is advised based on biblical principles.

If you are currently seeing a Christian counselor or considering doing so in the future, here are some things that you can do to get the most out of the experience.

1. Go Consistently

One of the big keys to having an effective experience with a Christian counselor is to strive for consistency. The things that you discuss with the counselor will build from one appointment to the next and taking long breaks between appointments will usually break the flow and it will also negatively impact you in your daily life. If there is something that you are struggling with and you are seeking advice from a counselor, make a commitment to prioritizing your appointments and their importance.

2. Pray

Most Christian counselors will pray with their clients at some point during their appointments (assuming the client is ok with this), but that doesn’t mean that you can’t or shouldn’t pray on your own as well. Spend time in prayer every day and ask for God’s help with the issues that you are facing. Let God know that you are trusting in Him to help you through the difficult times.

3. Remain Open and Willing to Change

Human nature is to look at others and see how they have contributed to the struggles that we are facing in our lives. But rather than focusing on how others are responsible for the difficulties in our lives, it is more productive to keeping an open mind to how we can improve the situation by responding in the most effective way. Rather than focusing externally, be willing to change yourself if you realize that you are not handling the situation in the most effective way.

4. Really Listen to the Counselor

Most counselors make an effort to let the client do most of the talking during the session. Their focus is on listening to you and understanding your situation. In order to get the most out of your time with the counselor, make it a priority to really listen to what the counselor is telling you and the advice that they give.

5. Keep Your Focus on Things that are Within Your Control

Many of the issues that will cause you trouble will involve all kinds of factors that are outside of your control. Getting hung up on these details and increasingly angry will not help the situation if you are not able to have an impact. Rather, focus on those things that you can control, such as your own attitude and actions, and you’ll find the results to be much more significant.
